This lodge has been developed with sustainability in mind and is a great example of a warm, comfortable off-the-grid home. Power is provided by solar panels and wind turbines and hot water is provided by a combination of a wetback from the large wood burner, instant gas and solar. All windows, doors and skylights are double-glazed and insulation has been maximised. Low emission paints, floorings and furnishings and sustainable building materials have been used where practical.
Under the Homestar residential rating scheme (http://www.homestar.org.nz), the lodge has a self-assessment rating of seven stars out of ten.
The property is also managed sustainably with biodynamic methods applied to areas of pasture and a small orchard of heritage fruit trees.
Control of stoats, rats, wild cats and possums is carried out as part of the management of the property.
